The course offers an overview of the academic literature on youth and an introduction to the field of youth studies focusing on the analytical concept of youth culture. It provides a historical, cross-cultural and multidisciplinary approach to notions of youth, young generation, young person, youth movements, youth scenes, youthscapes, youth cultures and youth subcultures, through the prism of different human, political and social sciences (sociology, psychology, cultural studies, political sciences, social geography, social anthropology, gender studies, popular culture studies, ethnomusicology, dance studies). However as it places special emphasis on anthropological perspectives and (multisited/multimodal) methodologies, it moves from local ethnographic examples and case studies to translocal youth cultural practices and experiences, and vice versa. The lectures are based on different axes and analytical categories ranging from space, gender, sexuality, authenticity, performativity to ritual, leisure, material, digital and visual culture, consumption, social class, resistance etc. The course revolves around questions which diachronically beset the youth studies’ discipline such as: which are the delineations of youth? Why do young people form youth cultures? What is the relationship of youth cultures with subcultures, popular culture, socio-political changes, commerciality and consumerism? Are youth cultures/subcultures manifestations of resistance against popular/mainstream culture and heteronormativity? Do they challenge and subvert or do they reproduce established structures and norms? Do they constitute ephemeral identities and lifestyles or do they constitute stable, crystallized and diachronic identities? What are the characteristics of diasporic youth identities and transnational youth scenes? What is the role of virtuality in their formation? How do social class, race, ethnicity and gender intersect with youth cultures? What are the anthropological dialectics towards youth performativities?
