Racism and Social Policy

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
The course is offered in English to ERASMUS and Greek students. It is organized as a reading seminar of important texts and planning tools concerning:
- the effects of global political-economic transformations (such as colonialism, racial capitalism, citizenship and border regimes) on the organization of welfare systems and the formation of "welfare racism"
- the institutional arrangements, interpersonal and emotional relationships and everyday practices of discrimination and exclusion in key fields of social policy (health, education, housing, employment, criminal justice)
- various anti-racist approaches and examples for policies of affirmative action, diversity, ethics of care and intersectionality
Το μἀθημα προσφέρεται στην αγγλικά γλώσσα για έλληνες φοιτητές και φοιτητές erasmus. Oργανώνεται ως σεμινάριο μελέτης σημαντικών κειμένων και εργαλείων σχεδιασμού που αφορούν:
- τις επιδράσεις των παγκόσμιων πολιτικο-οικονομικών μετασχηματισμών (όπως η αποικιοκρατία, ο φυλετικός καπιταλισμός, τα καθεστώτα ιθαγένειας και συνόρων) στην οργάνωση των συστημάτων ευημερίας και στην διαμόρφωση του «προνοιακού ρατσισμού»
- τις θεσμικές ρυθμίσεις, τις διαπροσωπικές και συναισθηματικές σχέσεις και καθημερινές πρακτικές διακρίσεων και αποκλεισμού σε επιμέρους πεδία της κοινωνικής πολιτικής (υγεία, εκπαίδευση, στέγαση, απασχόληση, ποινική δικαιοσύνη)
- διαφορετικές αντιρατσιστικές προσεγγίσεις, διεκδικήσεις και επίκαιρα παραδείγματα για πολιτικές θετικής δράσης, ποικιλότητας, ηθικής της φροντίδας και διαθεματικότητας.

Prerequisitess/ Prior Knowledge
This is an advanced undegraduate course offered to ERASMUS and Greek students on their final year of their studies. The language of instruction in English and so advanced knowledge of reading, writing and communication in English is essential. Priority is given to students with prior knowledge in: Comparative social policy, Social exclusion, Migration studies, Gender studies, modern social theory, social psychology.
Topics
The course is organized as a reading seminar. Each week students read and present chapters from the book Social Theory, Psychoanalysis and Racism by Simon Clarke (available on eclass) and complementary articles.
1. Organisation– and gaps in the teaching of racism in social policy/ social science programmes
2. Forms of Racism and the State: (New/ Cultural Racism, Meta-racism, Racial states/ Racism within the state/ Institutional Racism and Racist states/ Official racism (Clarke, Goldberg, Balibar).
3. Welfare racism, the legacy of colonialism and its comparative forms (Perocco, Jacobs, Williams)
4. Welfare ethics, recognition and care (Williams, Hogget, Kellond)
5. Racism and the stranger in modernity and post-modernity (Bauman, Hoggett)
6. Freud, racism and psychoanalysis, foundational concepts (the unconcious, the structure of the mind, defences, narcissism, uncanny, why war, group psychology, mourning and melancholia, the social unconscious);
7. The Frankurt school: anti-semitism and authoritarian personality
8. French psychonanalysis: Colonial identities and racial hatred (Fanon, Lacan, Zizek)
9. British psychoanalysis: projective identification, violence, and reparation (Klein, Hoggett)
10. British psychoanalysis: institutional racism, hostile environment and care (Bion, Winnicott, Hoggett, Kellond)
11. Presentations of Essay outlines: title, thesis statement, outline, bibliography and sources

Assessment
- Presentation of book chapter or key reading in class (3 points).
- Attendance and participation in class activities (1 point)
- Final Essay: Outline presentation (2 points) and text of 3000 words (4 points)
