Course description & objectives

This course provides the writing skills needed for cultural journalism and literary analysis. It explores how figurative writing is constructed and how it achieves its effects in a choice of texts that are broadly representative of the many themes and stylistic variations in twentieth-century short prose and drama. We begin with texts that exemplify realist narrative and then progresses to more experimental forms. In the drama section we savour contemporary idioms and the art of language as practised by a significant precursor to the postmodern evolution of our times (Samuel Beckett).

The objective of this course is to provide:

  • a working knowledge of how to structure an arts review and an academic essay;
  • the methodological tools for textual analysis and to introduce students to the schools of literary criticism. This takes the form of guided questions in relation to particular literary texts.

The study of drama, prose literature and essay writing will enhance your skills in textual analysis and in the acquisition of critical language. We will explore these texts with a  focus on representations of ‘otherness’ or cultural difference; on issues of identity (national, gendered and so on), socio-historical contexts, human relations and recognition -or not- of ‘otherness’.
