Federations in World Politics: Comparative and Historical Perspectives
(120566) - Professor Kostas Ant. Lavdas
Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
In the modern world, federations revolutionized world politics while transforming domestic political institutions and political commitments. From late-18th century USA to mid-20th century India, new federal political systems left a crucial imprint on domestic – international interactions, on the available models of political organization and on the structuring of world politics.
The course focuses on the interplay between international interactions and domestic institutional development in landmark historical and contemporary unions: USA, German Confederation, BRD, Russia, India, Canada, Switzerland. The cases range from historical examples, like the German Confederation of the 19th century (Deutscher Bund), examples of successful transitions from a confederate to a federal political system (Switzerland), to contemporary federal political systems including USA, BRD, India, Russia, Brazil, Mexico.
Course meetings will discuss the major theoretical - analytical issues as well as the particular cases, historical or contemporary.
