COURSE DESCRIPTION, STUDENT ASSESSMENT
During the 2024-25 academic year the course will be taught on Fridays from 12 noon till 3 p.m. in room 5 on the 6th floor of the 'new building'
I. Brief Description
The course aims at revisiting various areas of EU law and policy, both from a legal and from a political/governance perspective. It discusses a wide range of topics. It is based on the assumption that students are familiar with the core values, principles and mechanisms of the EU (from the perspective of law or politics) and intends to offer an alternative narrative, focused on the various governance mechanisms or issues at work at the level of the EU.
In 2024-25 the first part of the course is based on the concept of crisis. The second part (that follows the online test of 2 May 2025), covers issues of substantive law and policies, such as the Internal Market focusing in particular on the free movement of services and digitization, judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters, environmental EU policy and law, etc.
The common thread and the core learning outcome of the course is that students come to realize the diversity and complexity of decision making and of policy implementation at the EU level, which comprises international treaties, acts of binding secondary law, non-binding soft law instruments, self-regulation, the use of standards, the development of agencies and networks, political processes such as the Open Method of Coordination, simple political declarations and many more.
Although primarily conceived for Erasmus students, the course is also open to regular Greek students as experience shows that the contact between the two is enjoyfull and mutually beneficial.
II. Exams
Student assessement will take the form of a) an online (mid-term) test to be held on 2 May 2025, on the basis of teaching notes/powerpoint slides by the individual lecturers on this platform as well as th corresponding readings and b) a final written (unseen) exam to be held in June. The former will count for 25% and the latter for 75% of the overall mark.
No specific textbook is associated with this course.
