COURSE DESCRIPTION, STUDENT ASSESSMENT
During the 2025-26 academic year the course will be taught on Mondays, from 09.00-12.00 in Room 314, on the 2d floor of the Glass Building
I. Brief Description
The course aims at revisiting various areas of EU law and policy, both from a legal and from a governance perspective. It discusses a wide range of topics. It is based on the assumption that students are familiar with the core values, principles and mechanisms of the EU (from the perspective of law or politics) and intends to offer an alternative narrative, focused on the various governance mechanisms or issues at work at the level of the EU.
In 2025-26 the first part of the course is based on the concept of crisis. The second part covers issues of substantive law and policy, such as the Internal Market focusing in particular on the free movement of services and digitization, judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters, environmental EU policy and law, etc.
The common thread and the core learning outcome of the course is that students come to realize the diversity and complexity of decision making and of policy implementation at the EU level, which comprises international treaties, acts of binding secondary law, non-binding soft law instruments, self-regulation, the use of standards, the development of agencies and networks, political processes such as the Open Method of Coordination, simple political declarations and many more.
Although primarily conceived for Erasmus students, the course is also open to Panteion students as experience shows that the contact between the two is enjoyful and mutually beneficial.
II. Exams
Student assessement will take the form of a final written exam, with several questions to chose from, to be held in early June.
No specific textbook is associated with this course, but for each sessions readings are provided in the DOCUMENTS section of this site as well as in the rubric that follows this one (see below).
