History of Psychology

(6341) -  D. Moraitou

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

The course examines the beginning and evolution of the concept of human soul and existence in the course of time. It presents the Eastern traditions and psychological thinking in ancient Greek philosophy and follows the transformation of these ideas by Christian and Islamic writers. It shows the progression of ideas that led to the post-Renaissance development of empirical science until the articulation of the formal study of psychology in the second half of the nineteenth century. Further the course presents the psychological systems of the twentieth century and the contemporary post-systemic trends of psychology’s development. It traces the socio-cultural context in which the psychological ideas have arisen, while it indicates the most important philosophical, scientific and social effects of their emergence. At the same time, it attempts, by comparing and evaluating the psychological approaches, to highlight their epistemological and methodological continuity, their contradictions, their dialectical relationship and perspective. The aim of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the basis, nature, role of psychological science and its implications.
