Focuses on how diverse social actors – such as non-governmental organizations, social movements, social and cultural minorities, pressure groups, citizens, celebrities and consumers – make claims and campaign in the very broad arena of politics, employing alternative media, digital technologies and activist practices to amplify advocacy efforts and promote social change.
Upon completion of the course, students will be familiar with a number of issues, challenges and potentials for advocacy and social change in contemporary media and promotional culture. In particular, students will be able to:
- grasp key perspectives and debates on the relation between civil society and public sphere, and their interplay in the digital context
- identify differences in advocacy depending on the nature and the legal regulation of the action (humanitarian emergency action or developmental change)
- understand the role of different actors and their inter-relations especially during emergencies
- evaluate the impact of alternative communication/media and activist practices as a tool for advocacy and social change, looking at specific cases studies
- reflect critically on the value of digital technologies in promoting goals of social inclusion, justice and resistance
- apply methodological approaches and tools in planning and conducting research related to the topics of advocacy and social change
