The course examines the impact of digital media on politics. It probes into the application of digital media in formal politics and campaigning; assesses the role of digital media in gaining representation, mobilize people, coordinating and organizing political actions; and reviews controversial issues of political communication in the digital context.

 

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

 

  • explain concepts, theories and empirical research in the field of political communication
  • evaluate the impact of digitalization on various aspects of politics
  • analyse forms of strategic political communication (public opinion formation, marketing) in contemporary hybrid mediascapes
  • assess the use and the role of social media in political campaigning
  • reflect critically on a number of critical issues and challenges (propaganda, fake news, echo-chambers, hate speech) for political communication in the digital context
  • apply methodological approaches and tools in planning and conducting research related to the topics within the broader area of digital politics
